Game Recap and Highlights: Five-Run Eighth the Difference as Ponies Fall to Patriots

BINGHAMTON, NY – The Binghamton Rumble Ponies (18-30) gave up five eighth inning runs in a 7-2 loss to the Somerset Patriots (31-17) on Friday night at Mirabito Stadium. The two sides have split the first four games of the series.

Somerset scored first on a fielder's choice and Ronny Mauricio wasted no time getting the run back in the first with an RBI single spearheaded by a Brett Baty leadoff single. Mauricio has now eclipsed the 30 RBI mark on the season.

Francisco Alvarez gave the Ponies the lead with a long homer to left in the third which put the Ponies ahead 2-1. It was Alvarez's ninth long ball of the season and has 25 RBI.

Binghamton led 2-1 until Jesus Bastidas's third home run of the series tied the game at two. Bastidas finished 3-4 with an RBI and two runs scored.

The eighth inning saw Somerset plate five runs with three of them coming on a long go-ahead three-run home run from Andres Chaparro off Ponies reliever Kevin Gadea (0-2) which put the Patriots ahead 5-2.

Ponies starting pitcher Jesus Vargas earned a no-decision going five and a third innings giving up four hits and a run while walking one and striking out seven.

Somerset starter Luis Medina pitched five innings giving up five hits and two runs while walking one and striking out six. Nick Maciejewski (3-0) got the win for the Patriots pitching two scoreless innings surrendering a hit while striking out three.

The Ponies will continue their series against Somerset on Saturday evening. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 PM with pregame coverage beginning at 6:20 PM on NewsRadio 1290 WNBF and 92.1 FM.

POSTGAME NOTES: Baty went 2-4 with a run scored after coming off the IL… Mauricio now has a hit in seven of his last eight games… Alvarez has five homers in his last eight games.
