Game Recap: Binghamton Loses Late 7-5, Alvarez extends streak to 11 games

Ponies Drop Saturday Night Contest on Late Home Run

BINGHAMTON, NY – The Binghamton Rumble Ponies (20-35) dropped a 7-5 decision to the New Hampshire Fisher Cats (27-28) on Saturday night at Mirabito Stadium as Zac Cook hit a go-ahead three-run shot in the eighth which gave New Hampshire the lead.

Binghamton led 5-4 in the eighth and back-to-back to walks to Phil Clarke and Will Robertson set up Cook to send the ball over the center field wall off Ponies reliever Andrew Mitchell (0-1). It was Cook's seventh homer of the season.

The Fisher Cats hit back-to-back homers in the first courtesy of Spencer Horwitz and Orelvis Martinez off Ponies starter Alex Valverde. It was Martinez's team leading 15th homer of the season.

The Ponies got on the board with an RBI double from Francisco Alvarez in the third scoring Wyatt Young and the New Hampshire lead was trimmed to 2-1. Jose Colina later picked up his first RBI as a Pony with a sacrifice fly knifing into the Fisher Cats lead to make it 3-2 in the fourth.

The fifth inning rally featured RBI singles from Brett Baty and Ronny Mauricio to tie the game at four and Baty later scored on a wild pitch which put the Ponies ahead 5-4. Baty finished the game 2-4 with an RBI and a run scored.

Fisher Cats reliever Sean Mellen (2-0) got the win by pitching two scoreless innings giving up a hit and a walk while striking out three.

The Ponies will conclude their 12-game homestand against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats on Sunday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 1:05 PM with pregame coverage beginning at 12:50 PM on NewsRadio 1290 WNBF and 92.1 FM.

POSTGAME NOTES: Alvarez extended his hit streak to 11 games and has 10 RBI during that span… Mitch Ragan pitched three and a third innings of scoreless relief giving up a hit and striking out four… Young scored two runs and hit a double.
