NY Post: Mets miss out on sweep after getting outdueled by Cubs. "Kyle Hendricks and three relievers combined on a two-hitter to send the Mets to their fourth shutout loss of the season on Thursday night, this one 2-0, as the Cubs avoided a four-game sweep this week with the victory at Citi Field...Marcus Stroman spotted the Cubs two runs just three batters and five pitches into the game — on a Javy Baez two-run home run — but the right-hander rebounded, and departed trailing 2-0 after seven strong innings. NY Post: The Mets lost their fourth in a row at home. They were outscored 14-5 in the series, right after sweeping pitching-rich Tampa Bay and outscoring the Rays 29-9...Cueto (8-3) struck out a season-high eight in seven innings. He also doubled for the first extra-base hit of his career...The only run against Cueto came when he issued a bases-loaded walk to Young — at 6-foot-10, the Mets starter has a strike zone as large as anyone in the majors...Young (1-1) gave up two earned runs in seven innings. His four-game winning streak, which began in 2010 and was prolonged by a series of injuries, came to an end.

In a play that is indicative of the struggling Mets, first baseman Marv Throneberry's apparent first-inning triple becomes an out on an appeal play for missing second base in an 8-7 loss to the Cubs at the Polo Grounds. When New York manager Casey Stengel questions the call, he is told by the umpire, according to legend, "Don't bother arguing, Casey, he missed first base, too."

Gene Woodling becomes the first major leaguer to play for both the Yankees and the Mets. In his National League debut, the 38 year-old outfielder goes 2-for-4, scoring two runs for the new expansion team in an 8-7 loss to the Cubs at the Polo Grounds.

"Almost roadkill, on the verge of another maddening defeat, the Mets assembled a rally that ranked as maybe their best of 2018, injecting at least some hope into a team gasping for relevancy. The ninth-inning party culminated with Nimmo stroking a two-run, go-ahead homer against Brad Boxberger and Cabrera following with an insurance blast in a 5-3 victory over the Diamondbacks at Chase Field."
