SNY.TV: Mets takeaways from Thursday's 4-3 loss to Padres, including Taijuan Walker's shaky command. “After Taijuan Walker and Yu Darvish traded a pair of scoreless innings, the Padres struck first on a Fernando Tatis Jr. two-run homer in the bottom of the third. Tatis skied a ball to center field, and Mason Williams looked like he had a play, but the ball went in and out of his glove and bounced over the wall for a home run, giving San Diego a 2-0 lead.”

National Pastime.com: In a pregame ceremony at Citi Field, John Franco becomes the 26th member of the Mets Hall of Fame. The former southpaw reliever, who also played for Cincinnati and Houston, leads all lefties in all-time saves with 424, which includes 276 for the Mets, a franchise record.

Baseball Reference: The Mets complete a three-game sweep of the Cardinals with a 6 - 1 win to reach a virtual tie for first place in the NL East. Jon Niese strikes out a career-high 10 batters in 6 innings before leaving because of an accelerated heart beat. Kirk Nieuwenhuis hits a homer and drives in 3 runs. The Cards lost the first two games of the series by shutout, including Johan Santana's no-hitter on June 1st, and finally end their 26-inning scoring drought in the 8th, on an RBI single by Adron Chambers.

"Trachsel’s first pitch to Castilla with the bases loaded and two outs in the first inning didn’t land foul 10 rows into the seats like the Met righty thought it would. Instead, it improbably clanged off the right-field foul pole a few feet above the fence for a grand slam, giving Atlanta an early 4-0 lead that the anemic Mets could only catch up to but not overcome."

A Frank Thomas gave the Mets a 1-0 first inning lead against Juan Marichal (W,8-3) but that was all the runs the Mets would get as they fell to 12 and 34 and the Giants swept a 4 game series in their old Polo Grounds home.  Willie Mays hit his 19th HR to tie the game at 1 in the 6th and the Giants scored 5 more in the 7th for the win.

Gsellman turned in his third consecutive solid start after he was skipped in the rotation, pitching 5 ¹/₃ innings of two-run ball to pick up his second straight victory. But it was the bullpen that did the heavy lifting, recording 11 outs."
