Over his last six appearances, beginning with that outing at Citi Field on May 12 (in which he also allowed seven earned runs), he has pitched to a 14.19 ERA after a solid start to the season.”

Mark Teixeira hit a go-ahead homer and Phil Hughes won his third straight decision, sending the New York Yankees to a 4-2 victory over the Mets on Saturday night...With runners at the corners in the ninth inning, Rafael Soriano retired pinch-hitter Jordany Valdespin on a routine fly to end it...David Wright hit a long homer and Omar Quintanilla went deep for the first time since 2008, but the scuffling Mets lost for the fifth time in six games."

Three singles and three walks put the Indians ahead 6-0, and that was enough to prevent a Mets sweep...The Mets (31-31) lost for the sixth time in eight games and returned to .500...Trailing 6-2 in the seventh, the Mets committed two costly errors and were originally charged with another when Mo Vaughn froze on a grounder, refusing to throw to second or first. Vaughn’s deer in the headlights look summed up the first baseman’s miserable day and the Mets’ game. Maybe it summed up this entire mediocre season."

A four run fifth inning gave the Mets a comfortable 5-1 lead that they held until the 8th when Dwight gave up two runs and handed the ball to John Franco with 2 on and 2 out.  Franco allowed those runners to score and tie the game at 5.  Then in the 9th, a Chico Walker singled with the bases loaded scoring Howard Johnson for the eventual winning run.  Franco allowed the tying and winning runs to reach in the bottom of the ninth with one out but retired Delino DeShields on a douple play to end it.

"'Slider, down and moving away,' was the way Clemens described Piazza’s grand slam in the third that got the Mets moving quickly toward a 12-2 drubbing of the Yankees in Game 1 of the Subway Series...RBI singles by Derek Bell and Todd Zeile in the fourth and fifth, respectively, hiked the lead to 6-2 after five. Edgardo Alfonzo’s three-run homer in the sixth upped the bulge to 9-2 and ended Clemens’ night. And as the Rocket left the mound he was smothered with boos."

In the old timers game‚ the Brooklyn Dodgers/Yankees lose to the Mets‚ 1 - 0‚ in two innings.

National Pastime.com: 

Right fielder Rusty Staub becomes the pivot man in a very unusual double play during a 4-2 Mets victory against the Dodgers at Shea Stadium. Racing in from the outfield, 'Le Grand Orange' gets a throw near second base from first baseman John Milner and tags Davey Lopes, who was picked-off from first and then throws the ball home to nail Tom Paciorek trying to score from second during the P-1B-SS-1B-2B-1B-2B-RF-C rundown.

Before the game, the Mets retire Gil Hodges' number 14 in tribute to their late manager, who died of a heart attack just before the start of the season. In addition to leading his underdog club to a World Championship in 1969, the quiet leader also hit the first home run in franchise history, a 1962 solo shot at Busch Stadium off St. Louis right-hander Larry Jackson.
