Worcester, MA – The Syracuse Mets battled back from a 6-1 deficit to tie the game in the top of the ninth before a Roberto Ramos RBI double won the game for the Worcester Red Sox, 8-7, on Saturday afternoon at Polar Park. The WooSox now lead the six-game series, three games to two. The Red Sox have won each of their games so far in the series by just one run. (Box Score)
Early on, it looked like the home team would cruise to victory. Worcester (26-27) took a 6-1 lead into the top of the sixth, using timely hitting and excellent starting pitching to roar out to a big early lead. After Syracuse (17-34) scored the game's initial run in the top of the first on an RBI fielder's choice groundout from Daniel Palka, the Red Sox got to work in the bottom of the second. With two on base and two outs in the second, Connor Wong pounded a two-strike pitch over the center field fence to make it a 3-1 game in the blink of an eye. Wong would finish the game a triple shy of a cycle, going 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored.
In the third, Ronaldo Hernandez joined the home run party, lining a two-out shot over the left-field wall and making it a 4-1 game in the process. It was the fourth homer of the season for Hernandez.
In the fifth, the WooSox did it once again. This time, it was Johan Mieses who did the honors, curling a two-out, two-run shot around the left-field foul pole to up the Worcester lead to 6-1. Each of the WooSox first six runs came on home runs with two outs in an inning.
While the Red Sox offense was producing timely hits, their starting pitcher was living up to the hype. Brayan Bello racked up eight strikeouts in his first five innings of work, surrendering just one run on four hits with zero walks. Bello, a 23-year-old from the Dominican Republic, is considered the top pitching prospect in the Boston Red Sox minor league system. Bello retired 13 of the last 15 batters he had faced entering the sixth inning.
In that sixth inning, the game totally began to change. After a Khalil Lee groundout to start the frame, a walk to Dominic Smith and a Daniel Palka single put two runners on base with one out. That chased Bello from the game in favor of reliever Eduard Bazardo and truly got the offensive wheels turning for the Mets. After a Carlon Rincon flyout, JT Riddle, Travis Blankenhorn, and Nick Meyer all had RBI hits to slash the deficit to just one, 6-5. Blankenhorn had the biggest blow, smacking a two-run double to right field that scored Palka and Riddle. Meyer and Riddle chipped in RBI singles as well in the inning
In the eighth, Syracuse officially completed its comeback, tying the game up at six with a two-out rally of its own. Meyer walked with two outs, stole second base, and scored when Cody Bohanek blooped a soft single into shallow right field, knotting the game up, 6-6.
In the bottom of the eighth, the WooSox pushed themselves back in front with yet another two-out run. With Connor Wong on first and two down, Jaylin Davis lofted a high drive off the top of the 22-foot-high wall in right field, giving Wong time to race all the way home and make it 7-6 Worcester after eight innings. Davis finished the game 2-for-4 with a walk. All but one of the game's first 13 runs were scored with two outs.
In the top of the ninth, the Mets once again had a magic moment up their sleeve. With nobody on base and one out, Dominic Smith pounded a no-doubt home run over the wall in right-center field, sailing 447 feet in the air and knotting the game up one more time at 7-7. It was Smith's first home run in a regular season game since July 21, 2021. Smith is in his second game with Syracuse after being optioned from the New York Mets earlier this week.
In the bottom of the ninth, the WooSox ended this roller-coaster ride of a baseball game. Hernandez led off the frame with a single and was immediately lifted for a pinch-runner, Grant Williams. Roberto Ramos then got Williams moving with a line drive that rolled all the way into the right-field corner. Williams sprinted around third base and scored the game-winning run, giving Ramos an RBI double and the WooSox an 8-7 walk-off win.
Syracuse wraps up the six-game series against the Worcester Red Sox on Sunday afternoon with first pitch set for 1:05 p.m. Connor Grey is scheduled to make the start for the Mets, opposed by Michael Feliz for the WooSox.
