The pitch, a 2-2 offering that was a 91-mile- per-hour fastball, soared over the fence to the left of the center-field flagpole. Piazza’s 426-foot bomb, his 10th homer of the year, gave the Mets a much-needed 4-3 victory over the Phillies and catapulted them back into a first-place tie with the Braves, who lost by a similar score to the Expos last night in Atlanta."

With the game tied at 3 in the bottom of the 8th, the Cardinals scored three off Tug McGraw to take a 6-3 lead.  Then, in the top of the 9th, Ken Boswell hit a 3 run HR to tie it and Tommie Agee scored on a pass ball to give the Mets the lead and eventual winning run. Jerry Koosman pitched a 1-2-3 bottom of the 9th and was given the win.
