Nick Meyer had two doubles and five RBIs on Saturday night for Syracuse (Rick Nelson).
Norfolk, VA – The Syracuse Mets scored eight runs in the top of the tenth inning to secure a 13-8 win over the Norfolk Tides in ten innings on Saturday night at Harbor Park. The victory gives Syracuse a series win over Norfolk with one game still left to play. The Mets have won five of their last six games, dating back to Sunday, scoring 60 runs in those five wins with 61 hits.
The game entered the top of the tenth inning tied, 5-5, when Syracuse (25-39) took command. Cody Bohanek began the inning at second base as Syracuse's free runner. Luke Ritter led off with a walk, and Bohanek stole third base on ball four. Dominic Smith followed with a single that scored Bohanek to give the Mets a 6-5 lead. Mark Vientos then walked to load the bases for Daniel Palka, who grounded into a fielder's choice where Ritter was out at home for the first out, but the bases remained loaded. Travis Blankenhorn then grounded a ball to first base, and the throw home was not in time, so the fielder's choice gave Blankenhorn an RBI, kept the bases loaded, and scored Smith to make it a 7-5 ballgame. Nick Dini proceeded to work a bases-loaded walk to give Syracuse an 8-5 edge. Nick Meyer followed with a two-run double, extending the Mets advantage to five, 10-5. Johneshwy Fargas brought home a run with a groundout to shortstop, giving Syracuse an 11-5 lead. Then, Bohanek doubled home another run to make it 12-5. Finally, a Ritter double scored Bohanek to complete an eight-run inning the put the Mets in front 13-5. In all, the Mets scored their eight runs with four hits, three walks, a hit batter, a fielder's choices, and a groundout.
Norfolk (31-34) put up a fight in the bottom of the tenth. Shed Long Jr. was the free runner at second to begin the frame. Cadyn Grenier singled to put runners at first and third. Patrick Dorrian followed with a double that scored Long Jr. to trim the deficit to 13-6. Dylan Harris then had an RBI groundout to make it 13-7. The frame continued with a Gunnar Henderson RBI on an error that cut the Syracuse lead to five, 13-8. A fielder's choice brought the second out of the inning, but an error extended the game and was followed by a walk that loaded the bases. Mets reliever Trey Cobb came out of the bullpen and struck out Anthony Bemboom to end the ballgame as Cobb earned his first save of the season.
The Tides scored the first run of the game in the first inning without a hit. An error and two walks loaded the bases, and Long Jr. worked a bases-loaded walk to give his team a 1-0 lead.
The Mets took the lead in the top of the second. Palka singled, and Blankenhorn doubled putting runners at second and third. A Dini RBI groundout a Meyer RBI sacrifice fly gave Syracuse a 2-1 edge.
Norfolk responded in the bottom of the second though. With two outs, a Kyle Stowers two-run single gave the Tides back the lead, 3-2. Later in the inning, with Stowers at third and Rylan Bannon at first, Bannon took off for second as the Mets made a pickoff throw to first base, Stowers darted for home, and Smith's throw home was errant allowing the run to score for a 4-2 Norfolk lead. The Mets committed a season-high five errors during the game.
Syracuse came back again, this time in the fourth. With the bases loaded, Meyer hit a two-run double, knotting the game up, 4-4. Later in the inning, a Bohanek sac fly brought home Dini to give the Mets a 5-4 advantage.
The Tides retied the game in the fifth with another two-out run. Bannon was at third when Grenier lined a single to right field, scoring Bannon and pulling Norfolk even, 5-5. Norfolk's first five runs all came with two outs.
The game remained tied at five until the wild tenth inning when both teams combined for 11 runs.
Syracuse and Norfolk conclude their six-game series on Sunday afternoon at Harbor Park. First pitch is slated for 1:05 p.m.
