Game Recap: Tarpons Take Advantage of Walks, Shut Out St. Lucie Mets 4-0


Ventura strikes out 6 in 2.1 scoreless innings 

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (June 19, 2022) – The Tampa Tarpons took advantage of six St. Lucie walks to beat the Mets 4-0 on Sunday afternoon at Clover Park. 

Raimfer Salinas and Alexander Vargas took one out walks from Levi David (1-2) in the third inning. After a double steal, Salinas scored on a wild pitch to make it 1-0. Vargas went to third on the wild pitch and scored on a ground out for a 2-0 Tarpons lead. 

The scored stayed 2-0 until the top of the ninth when two walks and a single loaded the bases for the Tarpons against reliever Joshua Cornielly. Salinas singled home a run and Vargas lofted a sac fly to complete the scoring. 

Four Tarpons pitchers combined to shut the Mets out at home for the first time. Starter Zach Messinger held the Mets to one hit and two walks over the first 3.1 innings. 

Trevor Holloway (2-1) pitched the next 2.2 innings for the win. Harold Cortijo pitched the seventh and eighth innings. 

The Mets loaded the bases against Enrique Santana with out in the ninth but Santana struck out Jack-Thomas Wold and got a ground out from Fernando Villalobos to end the game. 

Mets starter Jordany Ventura pitched 2.1 innings with six strikeouts in his second start of the season. 

The seven Mets pitchers recorded 17 strikeouts. 

Omar De Los Santos went 1 for 4 with his team-leading 13th double. 

The Mets (40-22) are off on Monday. They return to the diamond on Tuesday when they begin a six-game commuter series at the Palm Beach Cardinals. First pitch on Tuesday at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
